The Talbot Burnley - A fitting tribute to NICK DANIELS
Monday, May 05, 2008
Saturday night just went beyond expectation for the band, the crowd were beyond their widest dreams. The gig had been weeks in planning, a lot of hard work and organisation had gone in to this. The band were worried if it would work or not but it was an awesome gig. Many people were saying that the band performed and gave a show that they hadn't even witnessed at a pro venue. It was great to see so many people many who had travelled from far and wide.
It was always going to be a very special night and the boys took to the stage in a packed house just before 9.30PM. Chasing Cars was played as they took the stage it was Nick and Carolines favourite song during his illness.
As the ligths came up a picture of Nick was projected on to the backdrop . Bono and Jules performed an amazing version of Van Diemans Land which Bono changed the words and named the song "Magic Land"...it had been specially done for the evening.
Second up was Nicks favourite song 11 O'Clock Tick Tock. Then the boys were off with many hits including New years Day, Until the end of the world and finishing the set with The Fly.
Rattle and Hum then left the stage for the evening........
They returned for the second set dressed in The NICK DANIELS BAND T-shirts. The backdrop lit up with the same name, a fitting tribute to Nick. After the third song I will Follow Bono took the crowd in his hand, he ran an auction of Nick Daniels T-shirts, signed posters and copies of a CD specially made for the night, on which Nick had played the guitar.
Nicks partner Caroline joined the band on stage and was presented with flowers, she was amazing throughout the night and all her family came along to support Caroline and the band. It is not yet confirmed but the band raised around FOUR HUNDRED Pounds for Nicks chosen charity Claires House Childrens Hospice a very worthy cause.
Auction over the celebration began playing ALL U2's hits including Beautiful Day, but as the boys broke in to ONE many in the the house were in tears, pictures of Nick's time in the band were projected up on to the backdrop. It was the most emotional experience I think the pub had ever witnessed and the boys did well to keep it all together.
The boys left the stage after With or Without You and came back to play pride. The crowd asking for more the band played a rocking version of Out of Control and brought the evening to a close with Vertigo.
The boys all agreed it was the right way to send Nick off and the technology worked Adam and Bono had spent a lot of time preparing and setting it all up for a number of weeks.
Jules you have been amazing through all of this, the rest of the band thank you for your true professionalism, and as usual you were amazing we could not of wished for anybody better to take on the gauntlet of playing the EDGE you are that man.
Craig and Mick as usual were on top form thanks again.
Caroline has asked us to pass on her thanks to everyone in the band and of course all the people who came to the evening. She was amazed at the turn out......
Carolines sister and the band thank all who contributed to the Charity, when we get the numbers confirmed we will let you know.A BIG thank you too all who spent their hard earned cash on souvenires of the night you supported the charity very well.
Finally we hope everyone enjoyed the night as much as the band did performing. It will be a gig that goes down in history a sad event turned in to a great celebration.
Michelle and Tony of The Talbot thanks for hosting the night and if you didn't already Nicks picture, it now takes pride of place IN THE TALBOT BURNLEY.
Watch out in the Burnley Express a reporter and a photographer were at the gig.
